INDIVIDUAL THERAPY IN WESTCHESTER AND THE GREATER NEW YORK AREA
Living a meaningful life is not a competition
Therapy for Type A adolescents and young adults.
You have always gravitated towards a juicy challenge: specialty sports camp, research opportunity in a professor’s lab, study abroad, hard-to-get internship, music competitions. Those eventually paved the way to graduate school or full-time work, followed by a circuit of friends’ weddings, moves, and hard decisions about money, family and where to live.
Adolescence and young adulthood in competitive, high-achieving communities is no joke.
You often have unparalleled access to opportunities and training; however, that access can come with a big cost. Being and seeming “great” is stressful, lonely, and endlessly demanding. And to make it harder, you may think you have no right to feel depressed or anxious given that “others would trade places with you” instantly.
Enter the guilt-shame-self-doubt complex.
My guess is that your old how-to-stand-out-while-also-fitting-in playbook is no longer cutting it.
You yearn for freedom to discard some of the old rules, but need some help figuring out this next phase. I work with older adolescents and people in their 20s and 30s to navigate many of the transitions and hard stuff that unfolds in these years.
You already know how to work hard.
Therapy can help you open up, accept and welcome mistakes, seek change rather than avoid it, and pursue more of what matters to you. Together we’ll identify your values and goals, and work each week to learn skills or concepts that make progress possible.
LICENSED CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
Sameena Groves, PhD
Hi. My name is Sameena Groves and I’m a New York-based clinical psychologist who believes that therapy is more like a laboratory than what you might see in the movies (you know, with a silent therapist sitting behind a client on a couch).
I help my clients test their hypotheses about themselves or what they’ve been taught a good life looks like.
I encourage them to run little experiments in how they act, to test out creative ways of responding to difficult situations, and to tinker with their habits or lifestyles. Therapeutic talk is most helpful when it is paired with action, teamwork, and unwavering support.
